The Care Dependency Grant (CDG) supports parents, foster parents and caregivers of a child under 18 who has a severe mental or physical disability and needs full-time, special care. It pays R2,400 a month.
Who qualifies
- The child is under 18 and needs full-time care because of a severe disability
- A SASSA medical assessment confirms the disability
- You and the child live in South Africa
- Your household income is below the means test limit (foster parents are exempt)
Who does not qualify
- The child is cared for full time in a state institution
Documents you need
- Your 13-digit ID document
- The child's birth certificate
- Medical reports about the child's disability
- Proof of income, or a court order if you are the foster parent
How to apply
- Visit a SASSA office to book the medical assessment.
- Take the child to the assessment with all medical records.
- Complete the application at SASSA after the assessment.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get the Care Dependency Grant and the Child Support Grant for the same child?
No. You get one or the other for the same child. The Care Dependency Grant pays more.
What happens when the child turns 18?
The child can then apply for the Disability Grant in their own name.
