The Funza Lushaka Bursary helps students become teachers in subjects where South Africa needs more teachers. It covers most study costs, and in return you teach at a public school for as many years as you received the bursary.

Who qualifies

  • South African citizen
  • Accepted for a BEd or PGCE at a public university
  • Studying in a priority teaching area
  • Meeting the academic requirements

Who does not qualify

  • Students not willing to sign the teaching service contract

How to apply

  1. Apply to a university for a BEd or PGCE first.
  2. Apply online on the Funza Lushaka website when applications open.
  3. Choose your priority subjects and upload your documents.
  4. If selected, sign the bursary agreement.

The service contract is binding

If you do not teach for the agreed years, the bursary can become a loan that you must repay.
