The Funza Lushaka Bursary helps students become teachers in subjects where South Africa needs more teachers. It covers most study costs, and in return you teach at a public school for as many years as you received the bursary.
Who qualifies
- South African citizen
- Accepted for a BEd or PGCE at a public university
- Studying in a priority teaching area
- Meeting the academic requirements
Who does not qualify
- Students not willing to sign the teaching service contract
How to apply
- Apply to a university for a BEd or PGCE first.
- Apply online on the Funza Lushaka website when applications open.
- Choose your priority subjects and upload your documents.
- If selected, sign the bursary agreement.
The service contract is binding
If you do not teach for the agreed years, the bursary can become a loan that you must repay.
