The Older Person's Grant, often called the old age pension, is paid to South Africans aged 60 and older. It pays R2,400 a month from 60 to 74 and R2,420 a month from 75.
Who qualifies
- Aged 60 or older
- South African citizen, permanent resident or refugee living in South Africa
- Your income and assets are below the means test limits
Who does not qualify
- You already receive another social grant for yourself
- You are cared for in a state institution
Documents you need
- Your 13-digit ID document
- Proof of income and assets, or a sworn statement
- Proof of marital status if married, divorced or widowed
- Bank details if you want the grant paid into your account
How to apply
- Go to your nearest SASSA office. If you are frail, a family member can ask SASSA about a home visit.
- Complete the application with a SASSA official and keep the receipt.
- If approved, you are paid from the month you applied.
