SASSA Status Check SRD

To check the status of your SRD grant, open the status page on srd.sassa.gov.za, enter your 13-digit South African ID number and the cellphone number linked to your SRD application, then tap Submit. The result shows one outcome for every month you applied for (approved, pending or declined) and, once a month is approved, a pay date.

What the R370 Is and Who Qualifies

The payment began in May 2020 as the special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress grant, a temporary R350 a month for adults who lost their income during lockdown. It was raised to R370 in April 2024 and has been renewed every year since. It is paid on behalf of the South African government to working-age adults who have little or no money coming in and no other state support.

Two things about its history still affect you today. First, the Minister of Finance extended funding in the November 2025 medium-term budget, so approved applicants keep receiving R370 until the end of the current financial year. Second, for the period from April 2022 onwards the money has been governed by regulations under the Social Assistance Act instead of the national state of disaster. That change is the reason your income is now tested every single month, and the reason you have a formal route to challenge a decision.

Basic eligibility

  • South African citizens, permanent residents, refugees, and any asylum seeker or special-permit holder whose documents are still valid.
  • Aged 18 to 59 and living in the country.
  • Unemployed, with less than R624 a month flowing into all of your bank accounts combined.
  • Not receiving another social grant in your own name, UIF benefits or NSFAS funding. A caregiver who receives child support money on behalf of a child can still qualify.
  • Not living in a state-funded institution.

How to Check Your SASSA Status Online, Step by Step

The quickest route is the SRD portal. Always use the official SASSA SRD website and type the address into your browser yourself. Do not tap links sent by SMS, Facebook or WhatsApp forwards, because copycat pages are the most common way ID numbers are stolen.

  1. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za and choose “Application status”.
  2. Enter your ID number exactly as it appears on your South African ID document. Refugees and permit holders use the file or permit number they applied with.
  3. Enter the mobile number you applied with. It must be the number linked to your application, not a new SIM.
  4. Tap Submit. Your results load underneath the form, newest month first.
  5. Tap a specific month to see the outcome, the reason if it was declined and, once approved, the exact payment date.

Do you have to reapply every month? No. Once you have an active SRD record, SASSA performs a fresh means test each month against banking, tax, labour and Home Affairs data. A person approved last month can be declined this month, so it is worth looking again before each payout.

That monthly re-test is the main reason to check your status regularly instead of assuming the money will arrive. The result for the current month normally appears around the third week, a few days before payouts begin.

Other Official Ways to Run a Status Check

No data, a slow website or a lost SIM card should not stop you from getting an answer. There are three more channels, and each suits a different problem.

ChannelHow it worksBest for
WhatsApp: 082 601 0111Save the number, send “Hi”, choose the SRD option and confirm the one-time PIN that arrives by SMS.Low data use and a slow website
Toll-free helpline: 0800 60 10 11Free from any network. Follow the SRD prompts and hold to speak to an agent.Having a decline reason explained
Local officeVisit your nearest SASSA office in person with your ID and proof of address.A lost SIM, a changed number or an identity mismatch
WebsiteEnter your ID and phone number at srd.sassa.gov.za.The full month-by-month record

You can also use the SASSA WhatsApp line to see a payout day or to change your contact details. The one-time PIN only ever arrives by SMS on the phone you registered, and nobody from the agency will ask you to forward it.

Many people help a parent or neighbour check their SASSA result. That is fine with the person’s permission. Doing it without consent, or changing someone’s banking information, is an offence.

About USSD codes: older guides list *134*7737# and *120*69277#. Users on several networks report that these codes currently return “service code not supported”. If that happens to you, switch to WhatsApp or the helpline instead of retrying.

What Each Status Means and What to Do Next

Your grant status is decided separately for each month, so one declined month does not cancel the months around it. Find the wording you see on screen in the table below.

Status shownWhat it meansYour next step
PendingYour details are still being verified for that month.Wait. Look again in about a week.
ApprovedYou passed every check for that month.Wait for a payout day to appear.
DeclinedOne of the monthly checks failed.Read the reason, then appeal if it is wrong.
ReferredThe record was flagged for a fraud or safety review.Wait, or call the helpline after 30 days.
Bank details pendingNo verified account is on your record.Add or correct your account online.
Identity verification failedYour details do not match Home Affairs records.Correct them, or go to an office.
CancelledThe application was withdrawn by you or closed by the system.Reinstate it online or apply again.

The most common decline reasons

  • Alternative income source identified: R624 or more moved into your accounts that month. Once-off gifts and loans from family often trigger this.
  • UIF registered: the labour database shows you as contributing or claiming.
  • Existing grant: you already receive another payment in your own name.
  • NSFAS registered: you are recorded as a funded student.
  • Age outside range: you are under 18 or have turned 60.

Grant Payment Dates Schedule: October to March

Your SASSA payment date depends on which grant you receive. The permanent SASSA grants for older persons, disability and children follow a fixed calendar that was published for the whole 2026/27 financial year. The R370 works differently. It is paid in batches during a payment window near the end of each month, and the agency only confirms the actual days about a week beforehand.

MonthOlder PersonsDisabilityChildren’s grantsSRD R370
OctoberFri 2 OctMon 5 OctTue 6 OctLate October, to be confirmed

JanuaryTue 5 JanWed 6 JanThu 7 JanLate January, to be confirmed
FebruaryTue 2 FebWed 3 FebThu 4 FebLate February, to be confirmed
MarchTue 2 MarWed 3 MarThu 4 MarLate March, to be confirmed
How to read the last column: R370 batches have recently run between the 20th and the 30th of the month, for example 24 to 26 August and 23 and 25 September. Treat any website that lists fixed R370 days months in advance with caution. Your own date only appears next to an approved month when you run the check.

Public holidays matter. No batch is processed on a holiday, which is why the September run skipped Heritage Day. National Women’s Day on 9 August 2026 fell on a Sunday and was observed on the Monday, well before that month’s run, so nothing moved.

Approved but no money yet?

  • Allow two to three working days after the date shown. Banks clear batches at different speeds.
  • Confirm that your bank details are verified and that the account is in your own name.
  • Each SRD payment goes to the account or cash-send option on your record, so an old or closed account will bounce it.
  • Still nothing after a week? Call the helpline and ask for a payment trace.

Declined? How to Appeal the Decision

If you are declined for any period, you have the right to appeal the SASSA decision. Appeals are not judged by the agency that turned you down. They go to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA), which means you lodge the appeal with the Department of Social Development.

  1. Open the appeals section of srd.sassa.gov.za.
  2. Enter your ID and cellphone number, then confirm the PIN sent to your phone.
  3. Select the declined month and choose the reason that matches your situation.
  4. Submit an appeal for each declined month separately. One appeal does not cover the others.
  5. Return to the same page to follow the outcome.

Open the government appeals form

Deadline: lodge within 30 days of the decline where you can, and never later than 90 days. The tribunal usually answers within 60 to 90 days. If it finds in your favour, the missed months are paid back to you.

The appeal process is free, and nobody can speed it up for a fee. An SRD appeal can only be lodged against a declined month, not against a pending one. Keep a bank statement for the disputed month, because it is the strongest proof that money entering your account was not income.

Keep Your Contact and Banking Details Current

Most stuck payments trace back to stale information on your SASSA profile. Two details cause nearly all of the trouble.

  • Cellphone number: change it online while you still have the old SIM, because the confirmation PIN is sent to the old phone. If the SIM is gone, an office visit is the only fix.
  • Bank details: the account must belong to you. Accounts in a partner’s or relative’s name fail verification, and re-verification can delay a payout by a cycle.

Updating either one does not restart your SRD grant application or change the months that were already approved.

Stay Safe From Status Check Scams

  • Checking, applying and appealing are always free.
  • Government pages end in .gov.za. Look at the address bar before you type anything.
  • Never share a one-time PIN, a bank PIN or a card number with anyone.
  • Ignore “fixers” in Facebook and WhatsApp groups who promise to unlock a result.
  • To report fraud, contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 or email [email protected].

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a SASSA SRD status check take?

A few seconds on a normal day. Between the 20th and the 30th of the month the website is at its busiest and can time out. Early weekday mornings are the most reliable time to try.

Can you check your SASSA SRD result without data?

Yes. The helpline on 0800 60 10 11 is free from every network, and the WhatsApp line uses very little data.

How often should you check your SRD status?

Once a month is enough. Look after the 20th, when the result for the current month has usually been loaded.

Is the R370 still being paid?

Yes. SASSA is still paying R370 a month to approved applicants, and funding is confirmed to the end of the current financial year. What happens after that has not been announced.

Why does my result say approved but show no date?

Approval and scheduling are two separate steps. The date is added once that month’s batches are arranged, normally a few days before payouts start. A missing date for longer than that usually points to unverified banking information.

Can I get R370 while receiving child support for my child?

Yes. Child support is paid for the child, not for you, so a caregiver can qualify if they meet the income test.

What if I never applied but a record shows under my ID?

Someone may have used your identity. Report it to the helpline straight away, open a case with the police and keep the reference.
